The 2018 Irish Person of the Year Is...
Patrick Canavan 2018 Toronto Irish Person of the Year
Patrick is the first ever Canadian-born recipient of this award. Patrick was born and reared in Toronto in the 1940's to an Irish father (Tyrone) and Scottish mother. He qualified as an electrician and spent most of his career working in this capacity with the Toronto District School Board until he retired in 2014.
In addition to his career at the TDSB, Pat served 3 terms as an Alderman in the old municipality of York in the late 1970's and early 1980's. He also owned and operated the Toronto bar "Paddy's Place" from 1983 to 2003, one of the earliest such establishments in the City and a very popular meeting place for the young Irish arrivals to Toronto in those years.
Patrick has been involved in the Irish community on a continuous basis since the early 1980's and in recent years has held the Chairperson role in the following community groups:
Toronto St. Patrick's Day Parade SocietyToronto Rose of Tralee competitionIrish Cultural Society of Toronto
Patrick still serves as Chair of the Irish Cultural Society and in September 2017 organised an event to mark that group's 50th year. This event attracted over 700 attendees and was an awesome showcase of Irish culture and activity in Toronto. Patrick's organization skills, his ability to draw in volunteers, his passion for the community he represents, and his sheer will-power to get things done were all highlighted by this event. Patrick thrives on bringing people together and puts in a lot of effort to ensure that as a community, we have many such opportunities to congregate and celebrate.
Patrick is actively supported in these efforts by his Dublin-born wife, Colette, and their 4 children.
Celebrate his achievements on Sunday March 4th, 12 Noon, at the Hilton Hotel. Tickets $70: IPOYTORONTO@GMAIL.COM
