The Burlington Legion's annual St. Patrick's Day gala

Date: Sun, Mar 17th, 2019

Burlington Legion's Annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner, Dance, Comedy, Irish Music, Auctions: Sunday, March 17, 5:00 to 12:00+

The Burlington Legion's annual St. Patrick's Day gala fundraiser will be on the day: Sunday, March 17th.  The doors will be open at 5:00 and the party continues until midnight.  Dinner is served at 6:00: an authentic home-cooked meal of corned-beef-and-cabbage.  Irish music will be playing all evening for dancing and listening pleasure. There will be Irish-flavour comedy for great laughs.  Auctions of valuable items will take place later in the evening.  It will be a (very) fun night for all.

This is the information that is sent out to prospective donors of auction items:

Each year, the Burlington Legion celebrates St. Patrick's day with a gala event c/o: an authentic home-cooked meal of corned beef & cabbage, Irish music, comedy with an Irish flavour, then a live auction of valuable items.  The event is heavily advertised with emails, a website, posters distributed around the region, media (newspapers, TV, radio). This annual event is typically sold out (300 persons). It is a social event, of course, but also an important fundraiser for the Legion.

The items auctioned are generous donations by persons/organizations wanting to contribute to the Burlington Legion's mission of serving veterans and their families; serving the community's charitable organizations (hospital, hospices, meals-on-wheels, etc. which veterans/their families are likely to utilize, in time).

The Legion uses Poppy-campaign funds to fund it's mission's community-service contributions/efforts, however, the Legion charter prevents the Legion from spending even one dime on operating expenses: 100% of Poppy-campaign donations must be returned to the community in the form of charity donations for veterans, their families, and community charitable organizations/initiatives.  The Legion must rely upon non-Poppy income to offset operating expenses to keep the doors open and thus be able to continue its mission to serve.  One of the major sources of income each year is proceeds from the St. Patrick's event.  A large portion of the proceeds comes from the evening's auctions.
